The Joy of Freedom: How a Pet Door Can Improve Your Pet’s Quality of Life

By |2026-09-18T09:39:34+10:00February 4th, 2023|Categories: Blog|

We all know the benefits of pet doors for us pet owners – being able to go about our day and leave the house without worrying about messes on the floor, good quality sleep without interruptions – these are just some of the ways that a pet door can make our lives easier. But what about the benefits for our pets? Those of us who love our pets like family will appreciate that being pet parents is not all about us. Our pet’s quality of life is important, and we owe it to them to make sure they’re as healthy and happy as can be. We might put off investing in something like a pet door if we feel it’s only a convenience for us and not them. But that’s not exactly true. When it comes to your pet’s quality of life, having a pet door can be more beneficial for them than you might think. Here are a few ways that investing in a pet door can make both of your lives easier, happier, and healthier: The benefits of pet doors for your pet's quality of life Some pets have the luxury of an owner who works from home or is retired and can tend to their needs all day long, but for most, this isn’t the case. Sometimes, we need to leave our pets at home on their own for a while. Hopefully, this isn’t for too long at a time, but for our pets, it’s impossible to know when we’ll be back. Without any way of getting outside to do their business, a house-trained pet can easily become anxious. They know you won’t be happy if they leave a mess inside, so it can be stressful for both their mind and their urinary tract to hold on. The increased independence that your pet will gain from having their very own pet door can free them from stress and boost their mood as well. In the wild, cats and dogs evolved to roam and interact with each other freely, but this is not usually possible for house pets. Being inside all day can leave your pet feeling bored and depressed. But allowing them the freedom to go outside, sniff, exercise, and see the world around them can give them the mental stimulation they need to thrive. How pet doors can affect a pet's relationship with their owner One of the things we appreciate most about our pets is their ability to read our emotions. However, this can have a negative affect on our relationship with our pets when we become frustrated by their needs. With fresh water in their water bowls and a closed door between them and relief, it’s no wonder our pets can’t help but make messes inside from time to time. But when we react ...

Pet Doors and the Environment: How Installing a Pet Door Can Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

By |2026-09-18T07:15:55+10:00January 6th, 2023|Categories: installing a pet door|Tags: |

As pet parents, we cherish our furry companions and strive to provide them with the best care and comfort possible. Cat and dog owners might already know the benefits of a doggie door for their own convenience, and they may even be aware of the positive effects these products have on an animal’s mental health. But one aspect that is not often discussed is their impact on the environment. With climate change looming and energy bills skyrocketing, it's important to consider the environmental impact of our choices. One area where we can make a positive difference is by installing a pet door in our homes. Not only do pet doors offer freedom and mental stimulation for our pets, but they can also contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. Read on to discover a few of the ways these products can help to keep your home as energy efficient as possible. How pet doors can help reduce our carbon footprint When it comes to environmental preservation, every little thing that we can do to help is important. Along with providing a healthier lifestyle for your pet and reducing their stress levels, investing in a pet door can also result in: Reduced energy consumption by HVAC systems One of the primary environmental advantages of installing a pet door is the potential for increased energy efficiency. When you give your pet the freedom to go in and out of the house independently, you reduce the need for constantly opening and closing doors. This means less cool air loss in summer and less heat loss in winter. Even if your HVAC system has a good energy star rating, the reduced energy consumption adds up over time. By minimising the exchange of indoor and outdoor air, pet doors help to maintain a more stable indoor temperature, reducing the workload on HVAC systems to slowly but surely reduce your carbon footprint. Reduced use of artificial lighting Another significant benefit of installing a pet door is the potential for reduced dependence on artificial lighting. Pets often have different sleep patterns than humans, and they may prefer to go outside at all times of the night. For us, however, a late night journey to the back door isn’t very fun in the dark.  By allowing your pets to access the outdoors without the need to switch on lights, you conserve energy and contribute to a greener lifestyle. This way, you ensure your pets are free to enjoy their natural instincts while you enjoy better sleep and better energy savings. Reduced use of heating and cooling systems On the one hand, a pet door can help to keep conditioned air inside, but on the other hand, it can lessen our reliance on cooling systems altogether. An open pet door facilitates natural ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate freely throughout ...

Why do dogs chew everything?

By |2026-09-11T11:26:43+10:00September 16th, 2022|Categories: Uncategorized|

If your dog is chewing objects in your home, and you’d prefer they don’t (e.g., shoes, hats, or furniture), then understanding why they do this is the first step. The first thing you need to know about dogs is that their mouths are used the same way we use our hands. Essentially, Dogs will explore the world using their mouth. If something spikes their interest, they’ll pick it up in their mouth and feel it by chewing. General mouthing objects is not a great concern, but it can be a problem when excessively chewing and destroying things. Many people who’ve owned a dog have come home to find a stuffed toy (or worse) strewn all over the place. Stuffed toys may not be an issue, but if your dog takes a shine to your new hiking boots, it can be extremely annoying and expensive! While destructive chewing is frustrating and annoying, you should never verbally or physically punish your dog (even if they are caught in the act). It’s best to understand why your dog is chewing excessively and modify your home and how you interact with your dog to correct their behaviour. The main reasons why dogs chew Dogs that chew do so for various reasons, but separation anxiety and boredom are the two main issues. When you’re looking to stop chewing, you should try to identify and fix the underlying problem. Boredom When left alone, dogs can get bored very quickly. Digging, barking (at nothing), tail chasing, and chewing are the main choices for a bored dog. To correct behaviours caused by boredom, you can tire your dog out with a long walk before you leave or provide them with stimulating toys. A stash of 15-20 toys is an excellent method for entertaining your dog. Keep most of the toys in a sealed tub and give your dog 3-4 to use during the day. Each day you can put away yesterday's toys and hand out fresh ones. Your dog will think these recycled toys are new (even if you’ve had them for over six months). Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety can be challenging to overcome, but with patience, you can train your dog to relax when you’re not home. Tail chasing, fretting, whining, whimpering, and barking are all signs of separation anxiety. When correcting separation anxiety, you can use some methods to correct boredom. However, you should also teach your dog that it is nothing to stress about when you leave for a few minutes. Start by not making a fuss when you're leaving. If your dog reacts to you picking up your keys, move them to a different spot in the house. When you begin training, leave like you usually would and step outside for a few minutes. Then when you come back inside, you can make a ...

How to train your dog to use a dog door?

By |2026-09-25T12:15:34+10:00June 24th, 2022|Categories: Blog|Tags: , , , |

Got yourself a doggy door, but you have no idea where to begin? Here is a five-step guide to teach your furry friend how to use a dog door effectively and with confidence – starting from determining the appropriate size to reinforcing each tiny success step by step.   If you’re thinking about getting a dog door and need some training tips, this post is for you! One of the most common questions about dog doors is: “Will my dog use the door?” Well, the answer is yes! But, they may need some training before fully understanding the freedom a dog door can provide. This article will reveal our popular method for training your dog to use a dog door successfully.   Remember that all dogs will learn at different speeds, but if you give them enough time, your dog will learn to use the door successfully and can go in and out whenever they please! Why Teaching Your Dog to Use a Dog Door Is Worth the Effort   Before we jump into the how-to, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate why teaching a dog to use a dog door is such a worthwhile investment of your time. Think about it – how many times a day do you get up just to open the back door for your furry mate? Whether it’s first thing in the morning, in the middle of a great TV show, or late at night, playing doorman for your dog can get a bit tiring after a while.   A dog door gives your pup the gift of independence. They can nip outside for a toilet break, soak up some sunshine in the backyard, or burn off some energy whenever they feel like it – all without needing you to drop what you’re doing. And honestly? Most dogs absolutely love it once they get the hang of it. That little boost of freedom can make a real difference to their confidence and wellbeing.   For pet owners who work from home, have young kids, or simply value their downtime, a trained dog who uses their door independently is a genuine game-changer. So yes, a little patience upfront is absolutely worth it! Choosing the Right Size Dog Door   Choosing the right-sized door for your dog will give you the best results when training them. If you get a door too big for a small dog, they may have trouble lifting the flap, which is too difficult for them to use. The same goes for a door that is too small – if your dog cannot fit comfortably through the door, they will not use it.   Once you’ve selected the correct size door, that’s great! But now, you need to ensure it is installed at the correct height. Please read the instructions provided ...

Do dogs really need crates?

By |2026-09-18T23:21:44+10:00April 21st, 2022|Categories: Blog, Uncategorized|Tags: |

If you haven’t had a lot of experience with dog crating, then a dog sitting in a crate can look like it’s being punished. However, dog crating is highly beneficial for all dogs. The number one reason you should introduce a crate to your dog’s home is to give them their personal space. While it may fly in the face of what humans prefer, dogs like to hang out in small and confined spaces. When dogs are in an open area, they can feel exposed and unprotected from potential attacks. And yes, it is doubtful your dog will be attacked in your home, but when you’re swimming in the ocean, do you ever think about being attacked by a shark? It’s unlikely at a 1 in 5 million chance. You actually have a higher chance of being harmed by sunstroke (1 in 6,400), but you feel safer waiting on the beach, don’t you? Well, dogs feel the same. While the home is a safe space, they feel safer in their crate. When a dog is scared, you may notice they try to find the smallest space possible, and they’ll curl up in that spot until the scary thing has gone. Crating dogs is becoming standard for many homes as people see the benefits of crates. This blog will explain the benefits of crates and tips on training your dog to use one. Crate training is good for you and your dog Crate training can come in handy during all sorts of scenarios. If your dog has had surgery, it may need a quiet place to relax and heal. Crates can also help out in times of stress, such as during fireworks or thunderstorms. Dogs can retreat to their crate whenever they feel threatened, anxious, or tired. The crate is their happy space! In your dog’s mind, the crate is a sanctuary and a place they will feel completely protected from everything the day has thrown at them. When your dog is in their crate, they must be left alone. They’ll come out after their batteries are charged, and when they feel like getting some much needed attention. Crate training is suited for dogs of any age Crates are usually introduced as a tool for training puppies. But, there is no age limit when it comes to crate training. If you create a positive atmosphere, and never use crates as punishment, your dog will happily stay in the crate for as long as required. Puppies A crate is essential for easy toilet training when you have a puppy. Feeding a young puppy (under 12 weeks) in their crate can also make cleaning up a breeze, as they’ll likely need to go very soon after eating. Dogs like to keep their sleeping area clean, and as your puppy gets older, they’ll ...

The Importance of Having a Pet Door

By |2026-09-18T23:21:21+10:00March 14th, 2022|Categories: Blog, Uncategorized|Tags: , |

If you have a pet that likes to go outside, you’ve probably considered installing a pet door. You may also wonder if having a pet door is all that important. This article will show you the importance of having a pet door and how it can provide a sense of freedom for your pets and keep them healthy. Today, pets are considered a part of the family. Gone are the days when people had an ‘outside dog’ or a ‘barn cat’. Attitudes around dogs and cats have been changing, especially with new research that found dogs are family-oriented and not the ‘lone wolf’ as was once believed. If you have cats, they tend to be solitary, but they’ll often form colony groups and have an established hierarchy in a shared home (or in the wild). Cats also require a certain amount of territory, so if you have more than one and they do not get along, having an additional room (or community areas) available is ideal. Why you should install a pet door As pets are a part of the family, we want them to experience as much of life as possible. All pets need to get the highest amounts of joy and activity to keep them stimulated. As people need to work or spend time not in the service of their pets, we can’t always be there to let our pets outside. This fact shows the importance of having a pet door as it allows your pet to choose when they come and go. With a pet door, your pets can go outside to play, relax in the sun, or go to the toilet. Cats can sit in the backyard and watch birds fly overhead, and dogs can run and get up to all sorts of fun! In addition to your pets choosing when they go outside, there are many other reasons you should install a pet door. It provides the freedom to choose inside or outside If your home does not have a pet door, they will need to rely on someone to let them in and out. In this scenario, your pet has limited freedoms. Sure, they can go out when they please, but only when someone is available, and they may struggle to communicate this need effectively. The ability to determine where they stay during the day is wildly important to your pet. Installing a pet door is very easy. If you’re handy with tools, the job can be completed in less than an hour. If you don’t have a suitable door, you can find pet doors designed for glass and brickwork, but these will often require a glazier or builder to install. The best solution for installing a pet door is to use a standard household door. A pet door can give your cat and ...

Here are 5 Reasons Why We Love Pet Water Fountains!

By |2026-09-18T09:37:33+10:00February 21st, 2022|Categories: Blog, Uncategorized|Tags: |

G’day friends and fellow pet lovers, Water is everywhere…… which means there are endless ways things can get into it! We have our traditional tap water, bottled spring water, alkaline water, structured water, PH water, deuterium-depleted water, etc. How did something so simple become so complicated? Sure, we all have our opinions about which options are best for us. Yet still it warms our hearts to see so many pet owners care about what they provide, not only their own, but their furry friend's body too. We know it can be overwhelming sometimes so we’ve done the homework for you. Let’s start with the basics. 1. Filtering your pet’s water, Why you might want to, and How to choose the best water fountain for your household. It’s a well-known fact that every life needs proper hydration, not only to live, but to thrive! And our pets are no exception. Dogs and cats also have internal temperature controls which ease the functioning of internal organs and energy regulation. These are all directly affected by their hydration levels. Because their bodies are made up of about 60-80% water (depending on size and breed), which they are constantly losing from urination, salivation and sweat - just like us, our pets need to frequently quench their thirst for these systems to operate at an optimal level and avoid potential health issues. Luckily, providing a healthy solution for our pet can be simple and cost effective. Research shows that a water fountain is an easy solution to increase our pet’s water consumption, boost hydration and decrease chances of contamination from nasty toxins. Here are four more reasons why you might consider a pet water fountain. 2. Isn't my pet bowl good enough? Pets prefer flowing water. The first thought that naturally comes into our minds is “isn’t the good ole’ pet bowl good enough for my pet? Why should I spend on a fancy fountain and water filters?” This is a fair assumption - and one we thought ourselves before we saw the research. Have you ever found your dog drinking from the toilet bowl, licking a dripping faucet? Or your cat lapping up water from your freshly poured cup of water. Studies have shown that animals – prefer to drink from flowing water rather than stagnant water found in a traditional bowl. The original theory is that no matter how domesticated they’ve become, our animals instinctively drink water from real sources, like ravines, lakes, ponds, and water that is in constant flow, not still and stale. Our pets' wild ancestors relied on natural sources for drinking water, and running water is safer and less contaminated than stagnant water – imagine drinking water to the beautiful hum of streaming water. It’s like a melodic call that draws your pet in, signalling their ...
